Samuel Sheldon Millom – Building Contractors for Cumbria

More project updates

This week at Samuel Sheldon Ltd, the team has been working hard on various building projects, and the work is progressing nicely. Let’s look at what has been happening behind the scenes.

We have a project in Barrow In Furness. It is a single-storey extension consisting of an assisted living washroom and utility area for a customer with limited mobility. We have selected brickwork to match the existing property. A lean-to roof has been installed, and new drainage to accommodate the new toilet and sink. The flooring has been insulated to comply with building regulations to ensure maximum energy efficiency. The following steps are for installing the low threshold door and window.

St Bees is still an ongoing project of a new garage plus some landscaping work. So far, the foundations are being dug out for the new garage to be built on, and the block work for the retaining wall has been completed to support the extended garage.

We are finally making some good progress with the house refurbishment in Coniston, the stairs are near completion regarding the plastering, and the bathroom and on-suite are in the progress of being fitted. The original plan at this property was to keep the original victorian floor tiles in the Dining room. Unfortunately, we have discovered dampness throughout, so we have had to dig the flooring up and replace the tiles. There is also an unvented water cylinder that will be the hot water source throughout the property.

Also, Askam is finally seeing progress made, the painters complete the bedrooms, and the joiners finish the final bits. The kitchen cupboards are made from oak veneered MDF to match the rest of the joinery on the property. Fitted bedroom furniture is also in the process of being put in place.

Lastly, St James School has made fantastic progress; all the classrooms are now fully plastered, and the steelwork is in place. The next stage is preparing for the brickwork to be completed.

We travel to your home or business in the South of Cumbria and Copeland areas. This can include,
  • Coniston
  • Askam

Broughton Garage base

Samuel Sheldon Ltd has had a hard-working, dedicated team working in Broughton In Furness, completing a garage base to accommodate a pre-fabricated concrete garage.

This involved digging out, forming a stepped strip foundation, and then building a flat block around the perimeter.
The sub-base consisted of crushed compacted hardcore, sand blinding, a Visqueen damp proof membrane, and steel to reinforce the concrete slab.
The concrete slab consisted of a stepped foundation with a flat block construction which is more than substantial to suit the pre-fabricated concrete garage.
The work at St James School in Millom has been set up in accordance with health and safety standards to create a safer working environment for the personnel on site and to warn any passers-by of the dangers of a construction site.
The old conservatory and concrete slab have been removed to make way for the new raft foundation, which the structural engineer specified.
The pre-construction survey revealed asbestos on site, which had to be removed by a professional and licensed company.
Radon was also detected in the ground, so a radon sump and barrier must be installed under the new concrete slab per new building regulations.
Paul and Ryan have been out again providing quotes for various new building projects this week; they have travelled to,
