It’s a happy new year at Samuel Sheldon, with all of us excited to get back to work. We have had a spike in enquiries on many different jobs over the holidays, which we are working on organizing into a new schedule for the upcoming weeks. Our team of skilled contractors have been catching up on a multitude of quick little jobs that have arrived and working on Market Street, which is receiving some new wall dashing and roofing work.

As January continues and things return to normal, we plan on returning to our more complex jobs. We will be continuing our work at St James Church, where we have begun working on the interior of the building. We will be working on structural supports and restoration of the floor and interior walls in due time, and as it develops, we shall keep you all updated with the progress. We additionally have a job to continue in Silecroft, where the team will be renovating an old cottage. We will be tackling the floor, which has suffered wear and tear over the years. We will be refurbishing it so that it is brand new for the customer. Afterwards, we aim to tackle other parts of the building, from the exterior walls to the roof. The cottage is situated in a nice location, so we are certain once our work is complete, it will be a wonderful new home.

The new year is approaching fast, and while our offices are closed for the holidays, we thought it would be nice to take this time of reflection and look back on the things we have accomplished over this past year. So why not sit back, relax, and read on as we delve into our construction projects from the year?

Early this year, we began working on our beach hut building project for a client who had purchased some land on the Silecroft beaches and wanted a cosy wooden cabin built much like the existing ones. We were excited to take on this project as it was a new idea for us, building a small cabin from scratch on the beach. It started with the demolition of the old building and the construction of the base structure, upon which we moved through the phases of the project to add the features the client had requested; decking, hot tub, kitchen, shower room, and a wood-burning stove. The perfect cosy little home away from home.

Moving on from there, another project the team had undertaken was a three-story house refurbishment in Coniston, which involved a new roof with a Velux window fitted, a complete plastering and rendering job throughout the property, and new PVC windows fitted. We went through this particular project in stages, prioritizing certain rooms that required more attention than others, such as the kitchen and bathroom.

There is much more we have completed throughout the year, but it is just as important to look forward and plan for the future as it is to reflect back on what we have learned. Samuel Sheldon Ltd will re-open on the 3^rd of January, 2023, and we couldn’t be more excited for the year ahead. Christmas is right around the corner! Over the week, we have placed a high priority on getting open jobs finished up to our quality standards. We have been fitting solid aluminium doors at St Bernards School in Barrow, ensuring they are adequately sealed against air draughts and water leaks. Our team members were working in The Green, fitting fascias and soffits in a local customer’s roof for airflow and a more robust structure.

Although the weather gets cold and the area gets dangerously icy, our time has been spent working indoors with the old Millom bank building. The team have been plaster-boarding the walls as a staging ground for future work on the building in the new year. The goal for this space is to build two commercial locations and six flats on the upper floor. We hope this will bring in some much-needed business and residential options for the town.

It’s just over one week before Christmas, and the team at Samuel Sheldon are working hard with our clients to get their work finished in time. Our professional building contractors have been visiting multiple properties around Copeland and Cumbria with a variety of tasks the team is well-suited for, such as roofing and guttering, dashing, new builds and more.

As the weather gets colder and the year winds down, we have had to step back from some of our more intensive outdoor jobs for the safety of our workers and due to some of our materials freezing. We have instead begun prioritising some indoor work, such as the old bank building in Millom, where many of the team have been plaster-boarding the walls for future work. We are planning on turning this building into six flats, as well as two commercial locations, to help bring more business and housing to the town. 

The team has also been doing some additional work throughout the local area down to Barrow. In The Green, the team has been fitting fascias and soffits in a local customer’s roof to help with airflow and stabilise the roofing structure. Especially with the cold weather and all the ice, having unstable or deteriorating support for the roof can be disastrous. 

We have also visited St Bernards School in Barrow, taking measurements of the doorframes and fitting solid aluminium doors to replace the old and worn ones. We ensure the doors we fit are properly sealed against draughts and leaks and locally source the materials we need for the project.

Samuel Sheldon has been braving the freezing weather this month with a wide variety of roofing work both in and out of the local area. As the temperatures start dropping, it is especially important to make sure your roof is up to par. Holes and leaks in your roof can be disastrous to the structural integrity of your home if left unattended and can leave you with a scary bill close to the holidays. In Barrow, the team have been fitting a GRP roof for a customer who wants to be as protected as possible in the winter temperatures. By laminating the roof with resin, fibreglass and topcoat, the roof will last for decades. We have also been at The Green to install PVC Fascias and guttering to the roof of a customer’s home. Without gutters, it is hard to tell where water will end up, and this can lead to pests and excess water leaking into your home through the roof. Guttering helps to divert water away from parts of your home by guiding it to a drain to help protect against dampness in and around the roof or walls. This can be very costly if left to get worse and can cause severe damage in the long term. 

Samuel Sheldon has been installing damp proofing membranes at a customer’s home in Broughton, in the bathroom, kitchen and around other areas that can pose a risk of dampness, like the roof. As we mentioned last week, the St. James Church project is still underway. We have begun repairing the walls and floor of the interior with locally sourced, traditionally made and installed materials so that the new, structurally improved and repaired church maintains the history and feel of the original building. We have been working closely with the laws surrounding heritage buildings as we have in the past, so the building is in line with their standards.

Over the last week, the team have been working extensively with heritage sites and restoration work. Samuel Sheldon Ltd has plenty of experience working to the high standards a heritage site requires, having done work with English Heritage in the past. Heritage restoration work is harder than one might expect. You must employ traditional building and maintenance methods such as lime mortar and sourcing traditional materials that match the overall theme of the original structure. 

The main job this week has been St James’ Church, which the team have been restoring. The job has been split up into phases, with the project currently in its third phase. The first phase involves repairing the damaged sandstone with locally sourced bricks to lay the foundation for the upcoming phases. The second phase refers to the brickwork and damp proofing of the structure. Some of the walls have deteriorated, as such, they may need to be replaced, and we have been using locally sourced bricks to do this. We believe in supporting local businesses as we work. 

Currently, in the third phase, we will be using modern damp-proof membranes to prevent water from leaking through the older parts of the structure. We will be replacing the damaged sections of brickwork on various parts of the building using locally sourced, matching bricks that have specifically been made in the traditional way to match the building’s appearance and colours. These are being embedded and painted by using lime mortar to maintain the heritage of the building further. We are additionally repainting a Lakeland stone gable using traditional mixed lime mortar and restoring the existing leaded windows on the church. We hope that by the end of the project, the church will be structurally sound while still maintaining its ancient roots.

As we hurtle into the winter weather with rain and chill, Samuel Sheldon Ltd is waiting for updates on jobs around the area. We haven’t had nothing to do; We have been getting a commercial video made for us by BM Tech Services Ltd. Paul shined in front of the camera. The energy and commitment he has shown both to the business and its employees are inspiring. His interview for the commercial video put forward how much he cares for the company and its image, its struggles, and its future. He has shown a fantastic ability to stay composed under pressure when answering questions and we can’t wait to show you all.

Karl and Ryan, for people who are not in front of a camera often, did quite well. They explained their job roles perfectly and acted like true professionals. While Ryan was quiet and found some trouble with the recording part, he received quite a confidence boost by the end of it. We are certain that the next time we have a commercial video made, Karl and Ryan will stand out as excellent speakers – as much as they are excellent employees.

You may not have thought about it often, but making sure to get regular roof inspections is rather important especially with the increasing amounts of rain during the winter season. It is recommended that you have your roof inspected and maintained at least once a year. This is important and is better done during the spring or autumn so that you know if your roof, even if properly installed, is ready for the seasons with more extreme weather conditions.

There are many signs that a roof is due a service and many of them are found during a routine inspection. It is always good practice to check, and if your roof is due a repair, why not contact us? Some signs of a roof needing to be repaired may not be obvious and can require a professional to inspect. Here is an overview of common signs:

• Cracked, loose or missing roof tiles. If the tiles have come off, then during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain or hail, water can leak into the attic which can cause water damage.
• Discolouration, moss or mould, which can indicate that part of the roof is rotting and needs attention to avoid it collapsing.
• Visible sunlight from the roof or attic, which can suggest that there are cracks or holes in the roof, leading to improper insulation against colder temperatures.
• Flashings that are separating from the rest of the roof – Flashing is the material placed around objects that protrude from the roof such as chimneys. If the flashing is loose, it can result in water leaking into the ceiling or walls – This can cause serious damage over time and may result in irreparable damage.
• Damaged ridges – If a ridge is in bad shape, it can cause the rest of the roof to fail. Ridges are important for blocking off water access.

More serious signs that can suggest a roof needs to be replaced entirely can include:

• Roof sagging – The ridge of your roof should be a straight line. If it isn’t, it can suggest there is structural damage in the roof which can cause it to collapse if left unattended.
• Serious leaks when it rains or snows during the winter, which can cause severe water damage
• Any objects that have fallen onto or through the roof, which will weaken or even damage its structural supports
• With slate roofs, any flaking or delamination of the tiles, or a powdering on the undersides of them. Often, slate can be turned over and reused for repairs, but if these issues come up then the slate has deteriorated too much to be effective and should be replaced entirely.
• For concrete roofs, any sedimentary deposits of the cement tiles ending up in the gutters. This is the result of the surface of concrete tiles oxidizing, turning it into powder, and eroding from wind and rain. This suggests the roof’s structure has become weak, which can cause significant structural damage if ignored.

While these signs can indicate that a roof is reparable, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes the damage, if routine inspections haven’t been carried out, runs too deep for a simple repair and can require a replacement roof.
