Barrow is a port town located on the northwest coast of the UK next to the Irish Sea and is surrounded by Estuaries. It became a municipal borough in 1867, and in 1974 it merged with Dalton and formed the Borough of Barrow in Furness. It was known throughout its modern history as a shipbuilding town; it was also known as an Iron and Steel working town until the factory finally closed at the end of the second world war. However, the shipbuilding continued, which went on to provide a number of naval ships as well as oil tankers and cruise liners. The Royal Navy nuclear submarine invincible was also built at the yard. After the cold war came to an end, the company Vickers Shipbuilding was sold to BAE Systems, and the town was saved from closure. Today Barrow is also a hub for energy generation and handling. Offshore wind farms form one of the highest concentrations of turbines in the world, with multiple operating bases in Barrow. Copeland was formed in 1974 when the government restructured a large part of the Lancashire peninsula into new boroughs.   

The bustling Victorian town of Barrow-in-Furness, situated between the sea and the lakes, makes the most of its enviable location. Some great walking and cycling routes start in the town centre, with wide streets lined with impressive sandstone buildings; the town was one of the country’s major shipbuilding centres in the 19th century and is embraced by two estuaries; Barrow-in-Furness possesses 60km of stunning coastline with impressive coastal views,   

While the Borough has a long history of mining and industry, it also values the importance of the natural environment. Nature reserves have been created from former industrial sites such as South Walney’s sand, salt, and gravel pits.   

Several high street names and independent shops sell everything from eco products to model trains in the town centres. The indoor market is the largest in Cumbria, and it is easy to spend an hour browsing through the many stalls.
