Plastering and Rendering Askam

Askam is a small village situated between Barrow-In-Furness and Ulverston. Originally the town grew from the village of Ireleth, which was established as a farming village in Medieval times. The long, sandy beach in front of Askam village is situated on the northern coast of the Furness peninsula. The village was developed into a town when it was discovered that there were large iron ore deposits in the area in the 18th century. It is now mostly known for having a functioning brick factory.

Historically, Askam-in-Furness was known for its industrial mining. The discovery of significant iron ore deposits in 1850 became England’s second-largest iron ore deposit. Over 7 million tonnes were extracted! This brought hundreds of workers to the area from across Britain and put Askam on the map, with a railway station opening in 1851 and rows of terraced houses popping up to accommodate the influx of miners and their families. Askam has since relinquished its mining days and is perhaps now better known for its abundance of wildlife and stunning sand-dune nature reserves. If you travel south from Carlisle or west from Lancaster, Askam is easily accessible by rail; Northern Trains offers a scenic coastal journey to Askam-in-Furness.

Plastering and Rendering Askam

A wet dash, also known as roughcast or a dry dash (Commonly known as pebble dashing), is used to render exterior walls and provides a long-lasting and durable finish. Cost-effective and just about maintenance free dry dash is decorative and tough. Lime is added to the rendering to give elasticity and reduce cracking once the finish has dried. A tanking rendering can be used where there is a high-water content, such as in the basement or for a property by a body of salt water that can cause cracks and corrosion, meaning waterproofing is required.

Plastering requires a certain skill level to get a smooth, even surface for interior walls. Therefore, it is highly recommended that a professional is employed to carry out this type of work. Sheldon’s has a range of tradespeople with a high level of skill and experience in and around the Askam area.

The Exterior will require scaffolding and the erection and removal, which Sheldon’s can arrange for you, saving you time and money. The right finish will depend on the type of building and your requirements, so be sure to consult with anyone working on the project to ensure everyone is aware of what is needed.

For instance, if it is a new build, work like wiring and plumbing should be carried out before plastering is scheduled to ensure this work is hidden by the plaster giving the job a smooth and professional finish.

The main ingredients for renders are cement, sand, lime and water. The best mix ratio is six parts sand, 1 part cement and 1 part lime. Any cement can be used, but the sand should be clean of impurities.

The plastering requires less cement than rendering and will typically need less coarse sand – to provide a smoother finish than the external render. Both plaster and render are classed as mortar coatings and are usually used on top of blockwork.

It is possible to plaster onto bare brickwork or blocks, known as (wet plastering) and is still the favoured process as it provides far superior soundproofing. A cement render (known as a scratch coat) is trowelled directly onto blockwork before this is finished with a skim coat.

Is plastering necessary? Drywall, for example, is often cheaper than plaster but does not provide insulation. Here are examples of alternatives to plaster, such as drywall, wood, and metal. While each of these materials has its benefits and drawbacks, the decision ultimately comes down to your needs. Sheldon’s will advise you on everything you need during the building process.
